The counter-drone problem the Pentagon can no longer ignore
That morning was the moment the entire logic of Western air defense started to break. Not because Patriots don't work, they do, but because the economics of shooting a $3 million interceptor at a $2,000 quadcopter or a $20,000 Shahed is a losing trade that any adversary with a chemistry set and a 3D printer can force you into indefinitely. Ukraine has since made this the defining feature of the war. Russia lobs waves of Iranian-designed Shaheds at Kyiv nightly, and the calculus of interception, cost per kill, radar coverage, magazine depth, has become the single most studied problem in modern defense procurement.
Every major military on earth has now understood the same thing at roughly the same time. You cannot win a drone war with legacy air defense. You need a new layer. Cheaper interceptors, sure, but more importantly you need detection, classification, tracking and decision-making at machine speed across a battlespace measured in kilometers rather than hundreds of kilometers. You need to see a small radar cross-section moving at 60 knots at 200 feet, decide in under a second whether it is a hobbyist, a delivery drone or a munition, and then hand off to a shooter, whether that shooter is a jamming array, a directed-energy weapon, a net gun on another drone, or an old-fashioned kinetic round.
That problem, the detect-classify-decide-defeat loop for the low-altitude airspace under 1,000 feet, is where the next decade of defense spending is going. Not into another generation of exquisite fighter jets. Into the boring, unglamorous middle layer of the airspace that until 2019 nobody bothered to defend because nobody could reach it cheaply. Now everyone can, and the response has to be industrial.
The US Army has been running programs like LIDS (Low, slow, small Unmanned aircraft Integrated Defeat System) and FS-LIDS (Fixed-Site variant) since 2020, and the tempo of contract awards has moved from prototype to production in a way that is genuinely rare in Pentagon procurement. In April 2025 the Department of Defense issued a broad directive on counter-small-UAS acquisition, essentially telling program offices to stop treating this as an experimental problem and start buying at scale. In Israel, following October 7 and the subsequent Hezbollah drone campaign, counter-drone budgets have run at effectively unlimited capacity, with the IDF integrating dozens of vendor systems into a single common operating picture. NATO members are following the same playbook.
Now, the trap for investors here is that the obvious names, the primes, are the wrong way to play this. Lockheed, Raytheon, Northrop, they will all book counter-drone revenue, but it will be a rounding error against their fighter, missile and satellite backlogs for years. The value in this category sits with the companies whose entire business is the low-altitude airspace, whose products have been battle-tested by Israeli and Ukrainian operators, and whose order books are only now starting to reflect what the Pentagon has decided to buy at scale.
One name in that category has moved from a speculative micro-cap 18 months ago to something the counter-drone program offices at Fort Sill and Redstone Arsenal now treat as a preferred vendor. Its counter-UAS system has racked up combat hours in Israeli service through most of 2024 and 2025.
